How to Clean 5 Dirtiest Spots in your Home?

We are referring to the dirtiest spots which are very stubborn to clean in your home which you might have missed or overlooked and on how to clean them:

1. Kitchen Sponges

According to a study, about 86% of kitchen sponges and cloths consist of yeast and mould. Therefore, kitchen sponges and clothes can work as a medium to transfer germs and bacteria from one place to another, instead of removing them, if they are not properly cleaned on a regular basis.

Cleaning Tips

1. Sanitise the sponges and cloths in a dishwasher with the hottest setting
2. Use the heated drying option after the first step

2. Switches and Doorknobs

Light switches, doorknobs, and handles are one of the dirtiest spots in your home and are usually caused by your hands. Everyone uses these spots areas so many times in a day and is often overlooked when cleaning.

About 14% of door handles from refrigerators were tested positive for staph, according to a report by NSF. Here are some cleaning tips to avoid any contamination:

Cleaning Tips

1. Wipe down all light switches, doorknobs, drawers, faucet handles and stove knobs by a disinfectant cleanser and leave for a few minutes until dried and then dab with a soft towel.

3. Bathroom Items

Bathrooms are considered to be the dirtiest place in a house. Bathtubs, bathroom mats, knobs, and shower curtains are items that need special attention.

Standing water which often remains in the bathtub after a shower can breed mould, staph and fungi. It can also thrive on shower curtains.

Cleaning Tips

1. Avoid leaving your bathtub with water. Remember to dry it off before leaving the bathroom.

2. Clean and disinfect the bathtub regularly. Use a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the solution into the dry bathtub and leave to evaporate.

4. Pet Untidiness

Pets are part of a family but keep in mind they carry bacteria, yeasts, and moulds with them including leaving particles on their bedding and cushions.

It has been found that 23% of pet toys contained dangerous staph bacteria when tested. Therefore, it’s imperative to keep your pets clean and the areas they use.

Cleaning Tips

1. Start with washing your hands after handling your pets to avoid spreading germs and bacteria.

2. Clean their feeding dishes on a daily basis with soap and hot water then sanitise by using a solution comprising one gallon of water and one tablespoon of bleach.

3. Sprinkle baking soda throughout your seats and coverings for 30 minutes and then vacuum.

5. Carpets

Carpets are another area for bacteria to thrive. About 200,000 different bacteria live in a square inch of your carpet. Common bacteria include e-coli, salmonella and many others.

Carpets are a trap for food particles, dust, skin cells and pet hairs to name a few.  Thorough and frequent vacuuming is essential.

Cleaning Tips

1. Vacuuming the carpet on a weekly basis.

2. Use an antibacterial spray to sanitise the surface of your carpet.

3. A professional deep steam carpet cleaning is recommended for your carpets at least twice a year.
